Mohamed Abubakar Ismail is the founding Director of the Space and Satellite Department under Somalia’s Ministry of Communication and Technology. Appointed in 2023, he has played a central role in pioneering the country's national space program—turning aspiration into action during a historic period of technological awakening for Somalia. With a deep-rooted passion for innovation and national development, Mohamed has led efforts to establish the country’s first space infrastructure, policy frameworks, and regulatory systems. He recognized early the value of space technology not just for scientific advancement, but for practical solutions in communication, climate monitoring, disaster preparedness, and national security. One of his key strengths lies in uniting stakeholders. Under his leadership, the department has fostered strong collaboration with the Somali private sector—most notably with Dalcom, a company that has made significant investments in the space domain under the visionary leadership of Eng. Jama. Mohamed has also brought universities and academic institutions into the fold, creating pathways for research, innovation, and capacity building. Firmly believing that human capital is the backbone of any national program, he launched nationwide recruitment of Somali engineers and scientists. His department has begun sending young professionals abroad to gain critical experience and knowledge from established space nations. For Mohamed, Somalia’s future in space is not a distant dream—it’s a mission in motion. His work stands as a powerful reminder that even in the face of great challenges, determined leadership, international cooperation, and a bold national vision can launch a new era.
