AI and machine learning are rapidly transforming Big Data in Earth observation from imagery-heavy analysis into real-time, decision-ready intelligence. For Africa, where EO demand is growing across agriculture, climate risk management, infrastructure monitoring, and security, AI is becoming the key enabler for scale, affordability, and indigenous value creation. This session focuses on how African institutions, startups, and data providers are applying AI and machine learning to Earth observation workflows to extract actionable insights from growing volumes of satellite data. Panellists will examine practical use cases in which AI-driven EO analytics are already delivering impact, including crop and yield monitoring, flood and drought risk assessment, land-use change detection, infrastructure monitoring, and environmental compliance. The session will assess how African actors can move from downstream data consumption toward building proprietary EO analytics, services, and platforms to position Africa as a key producer of space-based intelligence.
